Incompatible Allies: Black Lives Matter, March For Our Lives and the US Debate about Guns and Violence

Join Black Lives Matter DC for the first screening of Incompatible Allies, a documentary that compares local efforts to deal with gun violence with national activism. If the momentum of March For Our Lives turns out to be fleeting, where should those who are committed to ending gun violence direct their efforts?

Why is this event closed to the police and the media?

It’s closed to the police for many reasons but I think the most important one is that if the police are present then many of the participants will not feel they can be completely honest. I know that Black Lives Matter-DC activists have been harassed by the police, so ultimately, it’s counterproductive to have them in the room for many of these meetings. That’s not to say that Black Lives Matter-DC doesn’t deal with the police. It’s necessary when getting permits for marches and rallies. Last month they had the Executive Director and the Chief of Staff from the Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement. They aren’t the police, but they’ll need to work closely with the police on data collection and other things. So…

The press are explicitly invited to marches and rallies but not to the open houses where events are planned and strategies, like how to deal with the press, are laid out. I hope that makes sense.
