On November 29, 1999, my son Gary Hopkins, Jr., was gunned down by an off-duty Prince George’s County police officer. Along with mothers from across the nation who’ve lost their children to what is essentially state-sanctioned violence, I have been fighting to change the criminal justice system for the last twenty years. On October 27, 2019, Gary would have been 24. We plan to mark that day with a celebration of the lives of our loved ones. It will be a day of healing, storytelling, performances and activism.
